ST. LOUIS, MO (Sept. 9, 2016) – Cedric the Entertainer (also known as Cedric Kyles) announced today that the legendary Grammy-Award winning singer-songwriter Smokey Robinson will now headline his third annual An Evening with Cedric the Entertainer and Friends gala to benefit SSM Health St. Mary’s Hospital. The event, presented by World Wide Technology Foundation and the Steward Family Foundation will be held Saturday, Oct. 22 at the Peabody Opera House and will include a comedic performance by Cedric himself. Cedric will also be joined onstage by his friend George Lopez.
Aretha Franklin, also known as the “Queen of Soul” was set to headline the event, but in late August announced show cancellations due to health concerns. Franklin initially did not include St. Louis in her list of canceled shows, but after careful thought and consideration from her doctors, her health needed to be first and foremost. Robinson, who has also received a Grammy Living Legend Award, gladly stepped in to support the fundraiser.
“We have just learned that Aretha Franklin has been advised by her doctor to extend her period of rest through the end of October, which precludes her from performing at the Cedric the Entertainer and Friends Gala at Peabody Opera House on October 22,” said Travis Capers, president of SSM Health
St. Mary’s. “We are saddened that Ms. Franklin will not be able to be with us and we all pray for her speedy recovery.”
The Cedric the Entertainer and Friends gala event supports the upcoming Rosetta Boyce Kyles Women’s Pavilion at SSM Health St. Mary’s, supporting women’s health services by providing a comprehensive place for women to receive care in traditional areas of obstetrics, gynecology, breast disease and oncology care, but also in areas as diverse as sports medicine, depression and heart disease. The pavilion is to be named after Cedric’s mother, who lost her brave battle with cancer in 2015.
“We regret Ms. Franklin’s health concerns and wish her well in her recovery. We are deeply indebted to Smokey for graciously stepping in – as they say in the business – ‘the show must go on’ – and he will put on a fabulous one!” said Cedric. “Please keep Aretha in your prayers – I know the decision was not an easy one for her to make.”
Tickets already purchased for the Aretha Franklin performance will be honored that evening for the Smokey Robinson performance. Those requesting a refund may obtain one at the original point of purchase. For more information call Ticketmaster at 1-800-653-8000.
